THE girl with the gossip from the world of DVD rental is back.
This week’s treats include the horrific list compiled by EasyCinema.com
(not one for the easily scared), the tournament all FIFA 08 fans
have been waiting for, Lovefilm’s new arch nemesis (who make’s Dr.
Octopus seem like a puppy) and love (ahhhhh).
Horror Has Never Been So Easy!
HORROR fans rejoice! If you are a fan of all things spooky, and are stuck for ideas of what to watch next don’t panic. Our favourite orange DVD rental friends, EasyCinema.com has compiled a list of the 100 top horror films ever!
Topping the list is Jonathan Demm’s classic Silence of the Lambs. Even though it was made almost two decades ago, this psycho thriller, based on the book by Thomas Harris, has been awarded a horrific(!) four out of five stars by EasyCinema.com customers.
Other films on the list include the Choose DVD Rental team’s personal teeth chattering favourite, The Sixth Sense, as well as the cult classic (so creepy that it even got a mention in The Sopranos) Saw.
Golden oldies like Jaws and Psycho have also made it into the top ten, each being awarded a spine tingling three and a half stars out of five.
GamezGecko's FIFA 08 Tournament; The Heat Is On
AFTER the success of their February tournament, cheeky games rental website Gamez Gecko has teamed up with FIFA 08 specialists (yes, there is such a thing!) FifaFootballUnion.co.uk, to organise another, bigger tournament!
This tournament with feature twice as many teams as their pervious one, which only catered for 32 entries. So far 46 out of a possible 64 places have already been taken.
To register, visit the FIFA Football Union forum and sign up!
There are some great prizes for the winners, including 3 months free subscription to Gamez Gecko, or your choice of one of the following games: Call of Duty 4, Jericho, Spiderman 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock and Half Life 2.
Has Lovefilm Met Its Match?
Lovefilm may be the UK’s number one name in the online DVD rental market, but have they met their match when it comes to the world of downloading?
At first glance, Lovefilm may seem like the model business. With sales of £50,000,000 last year, and 900,000 customers currently subscribed to their services, you would be forgiven in thinking that the next likely step for Lovefilm was world domination.
But is that a cloud we see on the Lovefilm horizon? This cumulonimbus comes in the form of the prospect of hundreds of internet users downloading movies directly.
Last year, US DVD sales fell by a massive 4.5%, as the trend for downloading films grew.
Lovefilm customers who love downloading currently only have a choice of 800 available titles.
In order to provide a fairytale, Hollywood ending, in oppose to a fade to black, Lovefilm will need to take into consideration its customers who prefer to keep their films, rather than post them back.
The Two Early Bird High Fliers
THE top film added to most Lovefilm customer’s rental queues this week, for a second week running, was the thriller Michael Clayton.
We’re sure the film’s director, Tony Gilroy will be chuffed to hear this news, as the film (which was released less than a month ago!) has already been rated 70% by Lovefilm customers.
Other surprising films topping the chart this week are There Will Be Blood, and (fresh from its Oscar’s success) No Country For Old Men. Both of these films have not yet finished their cinema run, and neither is currently out on DVD, yet it seems Lovefilm customers are still desperate to see them!
In the Choose DVD Rental office, we gave the top 20 queue adds list a thorough going over, and have come to the conclusion that Lovefilm customers certainly know their films.
Brilliant flicks like Stardust, 3:10 to Yuma and American Gangster feature prominently on the list. If there’s ever any shortage of Oscar judges, the Academy should know where to come!
