Another DVD rental site goes under
UPDATE! It appears that reports of DVDtohome's demise are greatly exaggerated! DVD To Home is still, er, going strong. They just spent some time offline and forgot to respond to our repeated requests for information. Our apologies.
LOVEFILM'S recent merger with Amazon is just one tale-tell sign of the online DVD rental market consolidating itself.
However it is also visible in the cracks which are appearing the smaller rental companies, who are finding it increasingly hard to keep up with the big boys.
Three online DVD rental companies have gone under in the last six months alone. Over the summer, Movie Pigeon flew of to pastures greener. Just before Christmas 1DVD was down to none, and this week saw the demise of our favourite whipping boy, DVD to Home.
Just like our local groceries stores, smaller DVD rental companies cannot compete with the lower prices and bigger ranges offered by the LoveFilms and WalMarts of this world!
It does make us wonder how long smaller upstarts like DVD Choice, ViewDVD, PostaDVD and even the sturdier MovieConnect can survive.
LoveFilm Shared the Love
ONLINE DVD rental giants LoveFilm celebrated this Valentines Day in style! If you were stuck on what to get your special person this year, you should’ve headed over to LoveFilm.
DVD rental gift packages started at £36, for a 4 month subscription to LoveFilm and a single red rose. Other packages included a 6 month subscription and 6 red roses for £59, a 12 month subscription and a dozen red roses (for £103) or various mix and matches.
That’s not all. The kind people at LoveFilm contributed 50% of their net profits from the offer to the Global Fund to fight HIV/Aids in Africa.
