THIS week saw the demise of MovieConnect and rather worrying signs from Games Monster, as LoveFilm continues to profit like never before.
On a happier note however, Blockbuster DVD rental has launched a fab new competition, and LoveFilm has some sizzling summer bargains in its sale.
Movie-Disconnected
IT looks like time is up for the online DVD rental minnows MovieConnect.
Its website has ceased functioning, its phone number has been disconnected and we have just heard from Companies House that the Movieconnect Ltd was dissolved on the 6th of August.
Anyone attempting to access the website is told that the server has not been found.
Whilst it is sad to see MovieConnect go, it is not surprising, when you consider just how big a hold LoveFilm has got on the online rental market.
Games Monster: Has the beast been slain?
NOT only has this week seen the demise of MovieConnect, it also looks like GamesMonster is on its way out too.
Customers trying to sign up to GamesMonster are told that they are “no longer able to accept new subscribers at this time” and are encouraged to sign up to competing UK games rental sites GameTart, GameFlirt of GamesFrenzy (all using so-called ‘affiliate sign up codes’, allowing GamesMonster to earn a few pounds for each referral).
It just goes to show that smaller companies are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with rental giants such as LoveFilm and Blockbuster.
LoveFilm in £5 DVD sale frenzy
LOVEFILM has launched its summer sale this week, and there are some fantastic bargains to be had in its online store.
Many DVDs are on sale for under £5!
For just £4.93 you could pick up either Superbad, Hellboy, Spiderman 3, Over the Hedge or The Pursuit of Happiness.
Games prices have also been slashed. For instance you could pick up a copy of WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 for as little as £17.93; that’s over £12 off it’s rrp.
As always, shipping is completely free, so you have no excuses to start shopping!

Is LoveFilm fuelling a couch potato mentality?
AS the credit crunch continues to bite, more and more Brits are swapping Friday night down the pub for a more chilled evening on the sofa with a movie.
Forbs.com reported this week that 60% of us have adopted more of a ‘staying in’ attitude, which in turn has seen online rental companies, such as the UK giant LoveFilm, profit hugely.
LoveFilm recently reported that it has “taken on more subscribers than ever before in the last six months”, adding that “we are certainly seeing an impact from people option to stay in and customers are choosing us as they don’t even need to waste money on petrol by going to a traditional video store.”

And Finally…If you want to win something this week…
TO mark the release of the fabulous chic-flick 27 Dresses, Blockbuster has teamed up with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to give its customers the chance to win one of five limited edition digital photo frames.
The digital photo frames come with memory cards packed with sassy, fun and fashionable images from the film.
For your chance to win, simply visit the Blockbuster website (you don’t need to be a paying subscriber), and answer the following multiple choice question. All entries must be made by 25th August:
