Avatar is poised to take over the small screen from today, much to the delight of DVD rental sites.
As you may have heard elsewhere, the film took $2,712,115,019 worldwide at the box office, was nominated for a clutch of Oscars and represented a triumphant return to form for director James Cameron.
The DVD was released on Earth Day (April 22nd) in the US, a nod to its environmentally-friendly message, but Brits have had to wait until Monday to get their hands on a copy.
It's already currently the most searched for title on the Lovefilm site and images from the film adorn the OutNow site too.
High Demand
Given that it took over £91m in the UK box office, it's fair to say that expectations of Avatar's performance are high.
We've reported before on the danger of DVD rental sites being caught short as a result of some surprising Oscar results but this is release is unlikely to have caught anyone napping.
The film's first DVD and blu ray release dates have been discussed for months and luxury multi-disc editions of the film available later in the year are sure to increase revenues even further.
Rumours that 3D version of the film will be available in November have also persistently circulating too, although that really is just a rumour.
Watch it Free
As a largely 3D release, Avatar may have been a pricey for some when it came out in cinemas but new DVD rental subscribers will be able to watch it for a lot less than that.
The big DVD rental sites have promised that the film will be available to all subscribers, even those on free trials.
Getting the longest dvd rental free trial possible is recommended if you fancy trying to rent the DVD for free, though.
Lovefilm are currently offering 30 days free through the Choose site while Blockbuster (our top pick for new releases) are giving away two weeks for £1.
Even More Avatar
If that's not quite enough Avatar for you, you'll be pleased to hear that the film is also being re-release in August.
The re-release hopes to attract cinema-goers who missed it in 3D last time as a result of the release co-inciding with two other 3D blockbusters Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon.
It's also being positioned to attract the die-hard fans with the promise of an extra six minutes not seen in the first film.
Looking even further to the future there's the prospect of doing this all again, with the inevitable sequel.
Cameron has promised that the follow-up will explore new environments unseen in the first film.
"...I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rainforest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well," he told the LA Times' Hero Complex blog.
He also promised that sequels would expand on different planets in the Alpha Centauri AB system saying, "we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story - not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film."
