AFTER months of anticipation, Lovefilm's streaming service finally went live on PS3 today.
PS3 owners can now browse the Lovefilm catalogue and add titles to their rental queue to receive in the post or watch them instantly on the PS3.
Just as with Lovefilm's online streaming service, the more DVD rental customers pay for their monthly subscription, the more they'll be able to download.
Those with unlimited disc deals can watch as much free online streaming content as they like but those on the £5.99 a month deal will be limited to two hours and those paying £7.99 (£9.99 with games) will get four hours.
Even those on free trials will be able to take advantage of the streaming service; the Lovefilm application is free to download from the PS3 video menu, it just requires a Lovefilm account log-in.
Lovefilm's free trial is currently thirty days when you sign up through us or two weeks through the main Lovefilm site.
Extras on the way?
Currently the Lovefilm service includes all the great content we expect from one of the UK's best movie news sites - clear, concise reviews, ratings and images to help users choose a film.
PS3 users can also fast-forward, rewind, pause and even stop and resume watching movies on the service.
What it lacks currently is a pay per view selection, perhaps because this would be in competition with Sony's own service, Lovefilm have hinted that this could be on the way though.
Quality
The quality of films streamed through the PS3 may not quite live up the standards of blu ray fanatics but they're not far off DVD quality.
That might be music to the ears of PS3-owning film fans but it could be a potential strain on their broadband connections.
Streaming in a slightly lower quality means that the service should be accessible to anyone with broadband speeds of over 2Mb which is great because that's 87% of households.
A two hour movie streams at a bit-rate of 1560Kb/s so will use up 1.4GB of your broadband download allowance.
