LOVEFILM cut the cost of some of their most popular DVD rental deals last night.
An unlimited number of films a month, with two discs at home at a time, is now £9.99 a month.
That's a price cut of almost 25%, from £13.27.
New customers will be able to take advantage of the lower prices from today and, Lovefilm told us, the process of migrating existing subscribers to cheaper deals is "already underway".
Other price cuts are as follows:
The price change has already been applied to Lovefilm-powered Sofa Cinema, a Guardian site which has increasingly lost its own brand identity over the past few months.
Tesco DVD rental, also powered by Lovefilm, has yet to change its prices but we expect them to be cut just lower than Lovefilm's in line with the current agreement between the two. Watch this space.
Rejig to increase turnaround and streaming
There is another way to look at the Lovefilm price change, however.
It's not that they've decreased the standard price of their deals but that they've added an extra disc to every package.
There is now no unlimited DVD or DVD and games rental deal with just one disc out a time.
That should lead to higher turnaround times for customers, often dissatisfied at being left without a rental at home.
It should also encourage many that would otherwise have gone for rental deals capped at one, two, three or four discs a month to make the leap to unlimited.
Unlimited DVD rental deals are particularly significant for Lovefilm since those customers also get unlimited access to the service's online streaming library.
As we reported a few months ago, 67% of those that try Lovefilm streaming go on to become regular users, the highest try-to-buy conversion rate of any paid online streaming service.
This change could get even more people trying the service and, ultimately, more willing to pay for streaming online.
As a Tesco DVD rental member I asked when the prices will be reduced in line with those on the main Lovefilm site and got this reply "We would like to inform you that the package change is only for lovefilm, Unfortunately the tesco packages will remain same on your account."
Existing customers can migrate themselves by going to the account selection screen and choosing the cheaper deal.
