MoviePigeon - one of the original DVD rental companies - appears to have disappeared off the radar and all indications are that it has gone bust.
The company's website is no longer working and was briefly displaying adverts and advising users that the domain name has expired. Calls to the company's telephone line went unanswered.
Companies House, where MoviePigeon was listed as RentaDVD Limited, says a proposal to strike the company off has been issued.
Overdue
MoviePigeon's annual accounts for 2007 were listed as being 3 months overdue.
The site is one of the many small DVD rental companies that have been unable to compete with the now firmly established giants like Lovefilm and Blockbuster.
Lyndsey Burton, DVD Rental editor at ChooseDVDRental.co.uk said, "It's always a tragedy when we see yet another rental company go under, but this is a sign of the market maturing.
"Three years ago, there were over 40 rental companies, but the weaker ones fell by the wayside. Unfortunately, some of them were very good."
"MoviePigeon, however, had noticeably been deteriorating," she added.
1 star rating
The site had appeared to be going to seed for many months and in a review on ChooseDVDRental last month, it received just a 1 star rating owing to its poor customer service record and inferior range of choices.
"Unfortunately I think there are still a few more DVD rental services we'll see going under in the next year. A site with just a few thousand titles is never going to compete with the bigger sites," said Ms Burton.
It is not certain when MoviePigeon officially ceased trading, or whether existing customers have been left out of pocket.
