Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang
Out to rent from Blockbuster and Cinema Paradiso from today.
This sequel sees Nanny McPhee called to the aid of some WWII evacuees.
Emma Thompson, who also wrote the script, takes on the title role - hairy wart, monobrow and all - with Maggie Gyllenhaal (paying the sort of role you'd expect from Emma Thompson)and Maggie Smith in supporting roles.
This is a real kids film, don't expect any arch references designed to fly over the little ones' heads.
Instead, everyone gets splattered with mud or worse, pigs do a synchronised swim routine and the kids generally run riot breaking things.
Unfortunately, though, Nany McPhee is another victim of the Universal pictures problem so this isn't one you can get through Lovefilm or OutNow.
Chloe
Out to rent from today.
Sometimes I daydream about a film that will star Julianne Moore as a future Lindsay Lohan, a sort of Hollywood self-help programme, after which there'll be a Mean Girls-style celeb group sharing session.
Until that masterpiece gets made, though, we'll have to make do with Moore going Sapphically semi-insane in this remake of a French film - Nathalie - starring Gerard Depardieu.
Moore plays a suspicious wife who hires a prostitute - Amanda Siegfried - to check out the fidelity of her husband.
Seigfried is surprisingly adept at playing the more mad side of steamy though towards the end the film is more silly than sexy.
Best in Show
Stream on Lovefilm player from today. Out to rent on DVD elsewhere.
Christopher Guest has form when it comes to turning out hilarious mockumentarys.
If you saw and liked any of the following - This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration - then you should rent this too.
A look inside the world of dog shows, Best in Show rounds up the usual cast of oddballs all of whom come to the contest with a seriousness that's sometimes oddly touching as well as funny.
This is also one for those fond of Jane Lynch in Glee, she's on similarly good form here as an over-dedicated poodle trainer.
