New to Rental: 21st June

This week's latest DVD and blu ray releases go all romantic.

Cargo
Out to rent on DVD and Blu Ray from today.

Set on a cargo ship a few light years shy of an uninhabitable Earth surrounded by space stations full of huddled masses, Cargo is a beautifully shot and genuinely chilling thriller.

Dr Laura Portmann is standing guard on the ship's journey to save enough money to visit her sister on the paradise planet of Rhea when she realises that something might be up.

She's forced to wake the sleeping crew and descend to the cargo bay to make the inevitable gruesome discoveries and try to work out what the ship is really carrying and where it's going.

Stylishly shot, Cargo is the kind of film that makes you relive the best bits of great films like Alien, Solaris and Sunshine. In other words, it's Sci-fi with a brain, and one that doesn't skimp on thrills. Not to be missed.

Shutter Island
Out to rent on DVD and Blu Ray from Blockbuster from Friday and from other DVD rental sites from August 2nd.

Also not short on thrills and spills is Scorsese's latest.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a film noir-ish detective hell bent on scowling his own face off whilst leading an investigation into an escape at the local island-based mental hospital which also happens to house an arsonist who killed his wife (Michelle Williams).

The hospital is unmistakably gothic - all damp corridors and rickety spiral staircases - and the island's rain-soaked landscape doesn't hurt the atmosphere either.

The film is so full of twists that the plot is difficult to describe without giving it away but there's plenty to plot to be had, almost to the point of hysteria: locked room mysteries struggling for space between Nazis and suspicious-looking, pipe-smoking prison warders.

If you go along with it, though, it's a good-looking, lurid melodrama.

The Shining
Now online on the Lovefilm player.

Heere's... The Shining.

The eagle-eyed will notice that this isn't exactly a new release but it is one of the latest films to be added to Lovefilm's online player, available to those with the site's unlimited DVD rental deals.

You'd have to be going some for the film not to ring a bell - almost everything about it has been endlessly parodied - but that hardly diminishes the effect.
