Fight the flu with a DVD

Not another article about swine flu! Well yes, but we promise you no pork-related puns.

You're probably sick to death of hearing about the world's imminent doom by now. While the media have been hyping up the situation to warn us of our impending death-by-sneezing, early signs show that this could be a real bonus for DVD rental companies.

As Mexicans take to their homes in a bid to avoid infection, DVD rental is reportedly booming as residents try to find ways to amuse themselves indoors.

You have to admit, they're onto a winner there. Perhaps the Government should promote online DVD rental in their upcoming literature advising the population on what to do in a pandemic. It makes sense - you don't have to leave your house and risk coming into contact with the whopping eight confirmed cases in the UK. When the postman arrives, assuming he's washed his hands properly, you get unadulterated film goodness to entertain you while Armageddon continues outside.

In the face of a pandemic, Choose recommends:

  • Stephen King's The Stand - After a man-made virus kills off 99% of the human race, the survivors start having weird dreams and visions.
  • Outbreak - A monkey is to blame for the introduction of a deadly virus to the USA with a 100% mortality rate.
  • Babe - Because some pigs are innocent.
  • One Flu Over the Cuckoo's Nest – I'll get my coat.

Hollywood fights back in the war against pirates

Following in the wake of last week's Pirate Bay trial, software company RealNetworks is now in the firing line.

RealNetworks, the organisation behind the popular RealPlayer has been in court this week, battling it out with The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) over accusations that its DVD ripping software aids consumers to bypass copyright protection measures.

The software, RealDVD, lets users rip DVDs onto their hard drive, but then places restrictions on the file so that it can't be copied, uploaded or exported.

The MPAA, who are representing six major film studios, argue that it opens the way for the 3R policy - rent, rip and return, where users rent DVDs, take a copy, then return it.

DVD copying software has been around for years, and RealNetworks argues that it merely allows users of the software to carry copies of films without transporting the original discs with them.

The judge for the case is the same who ruled against Napster, so RealNetworks could be in for a RealFight.

BAFTA-winning TV... on DVD

Finally, this week saw the cream of TV's crop gracing the red carpet for the BAFTA television awards. Here are some of the winners you can add to your rental queue:

Funny man David Mitchell scooped the award for Best comedy performance for his role of hapless loser, Mark Corrigan, in Peep Show. Arguably the finest comedy to come out of the century so far, Peep Show Series' 1-5 are available for rental from LoveFilm DVD Rental, Blockbuster DVD Rental and most major online DVD rental companies.

Best drama series went to Wallander, a series of murder mysteries set in Sweden. Based on the novels by Henning Mankell, the series sees Kenneth Branagh in top form as tenacious cop, Kurt Wallander.

From the makers of Father Ted, The IT Crowd took the award for Best sit-com. Set in the dingy basement of a London office, it shows the exploits of the geeky IT department.

While feature films usually get the most publicity for DVD rental, don't miss out on award-winning television too!
