Online DVD Rental News Roundup (11 Sep 09)
How you can soon be picking up a DVD rental with your weekly shop, rumours over a brand new rental service from video giants YouTube and why YouTube has been chosen as one of the UK's top 10 trailblazing companies.

THIS week sees a digital innovation by LoveFilm, some naked truths by Universal and the 80s remakes the nation would most like to see.

LoveFilm streams premiere

LoveFilm pulled off another first this week when they streamed the premiere of thriller Vinyan to members via its website.

Teaming up with Revolver entertainment, the streaming took place at the same time as the movie premiered in London's swanky West End, although there was no red carpet to be found online.

It's a great addition to LoveFilm's streaming service, which began in the summer. Simon Morris, chief marketing officer at LoveFilm said: ""We've always been an innovator and this is another digital first."

A live Q&A session was also held following the screening.

The movie is available to watch in cinemas from next week and is available on pay-per-view streaming via LoveFilm on the 15 October.

Could this pave the way for a more interactive cinematic experience? Well, while we can't expect to have our very own Q&A with the likes of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, it's certainly a step in the right direction.

It's ladies night at Universal

We were intrigued to read in 'DVD and Blu-ray Review' this week that Universal studios plan to teach women about Blu-ray (gosh thanks!) by holding a ladies-only invite-only evening with, err, 'butlers in the buff'.

The night will feature clips from chick flicks such as Love Actually and Bridget Jones, as well as drinks and nibbles served by the hunky waiters.

Now hold on a second whilst we put on our feminist caps: is this really the only way women can be enticed to embrace the film industry? Why on earth do Universal think that women don't understand blu-ray in any case (which, in point of fact, isn't even that complicated)?

Hmmm. Think again, Universal! That's just bare-arsed cheek.

The most wanted '80s remakes

Finally this week, put your nostalgia hats on, and do the Truffle Shuffle, as legendary flick The Goonies has been voted the most wanted '80s remake in a poll by LoveFilm users.

The classic treasure hunt film bagged the top slot with 19% of the vote.

Following closely behind with 14% is the 1986 favourite, Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and a rather eye-catching cod-piece.

Flying into third place was Oscar-winning Top Gun, starring a younger Tom Cruise, before he started jumping on Oprah's couch.

"Whether you're old enough to remember them for the first time around or are watching them for the very first time, there's no denying that 80s films have a place in our hearts.

Whether the "new class" can reach the cult status of some of the 80s classics remains to be seen," said Helen Cowley, editor of Love Film.

Also featuring in the top ten were classics such as horror film The Shining, coming of age flicks,The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as well as Who Framed Roger Rabbit and An Officer and A Gentleman.

Now a poll is all well and good, but the question remains, who would even want to see a remake of The Goonies? Seems like sacrilege, really.
