Helen Storey rounds up the latest online DVD rental news and reveals Cinema Paradiso's decision to offer Blu-ray titles on top of their regular DVDs, the launch of Resident Evil 5 from LoveFilm.

This week sees the launch of a new DVD rental service for your mobile phone, a warning from Korea about piracy and a few titles we predict should go nicely on your rental queue.

Movie rentals on your mobile phone

Communication giant Samsung has launched a new download service this week that will allow you to watch full-length feature movies and TV programmes on your Samsung mobile.

The service, which currently contains over 10,000 titles, offers download-to-buy or download-to-rent options.

Both options allow you to download a format to watch either on your PC, or on your mobile, but at the moment the mobile service is only available for those with their iPhone alternative, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition.

Prices on download-to-own are between £6.99 and £16.99, depending on which title you buy, and a rental for 24 hours costs between £2.49 and £3.99.

Whilst a movie viewable on your phone takes only 10 minutes to download from a PC and transfer it to your handset, will anyone actually want to watch a blockbuster on a tiny 2 inch screen?

Head of Content at Samsung, Nick Turner-Samuels said that watching a movie from your phone can be "a real pleasure".

Given the chance to watch a film from a tiny mobile, or a 50 inch LCD seems like no contest really.

Korea sounds warning over DVD piracy if Britain’s broadband goes super fast

Fears are rising that the UK may go the same way as Korea if we ramp up our broadband speeds.

Korean broadband speeds are at 100Mb/s, which is 10 times faster than the UK national average of a mere 10Mb/s.

While for most people this just means they can load their Facebook pages a bit faster, it has also pleased the internet pirates, and Korea now has the most prolific piracy problem in the world.

It takes just two minutes to download a full-length film using Korean broadband, and as a result of the huge piracy problems, all the major film producers have withdrawn their DVD distribution rights throughout the country.

With the recent launch of Virgin's super-fast 50Mb broadband, even faster broadband speeds are definitely on the cards for the UK.

To combat the problem over here, some major film companies including Warner have called for a "3 strikes and you're out" rule, which warns repeat illegal downloaders before throttling or removing their internet access entirely, but this has not been met with agreement from some UK broadband providers like Orange and TalkTalk.

Knowing film release sparks collections of 'number' and 'prediction' films

Finally this week, if you just want to settle back with some good rental DVDs, why not give them a theme?

Just released is Nicolas Cage's spooky thriller Knowing, which combines a series of numbers with predicting the future. It's not quite Nostradamus, but here are five other number and prediction films to add to your DVD rental queue if you're trying any DVD rental free trials.

Not ones to watch if you're in any way scared of flying, but the Final Destination Trilogy tells the eerie tale of a group of typical American teenagers who avert death due to a premonition when the Grim Reaper gets grumpy.

No premonition film list could be complete without The Shining. Based on a Stephen King novel, this classic hears Jack Nicholson's iconic "Here's Johnny!" catchphrase.

Another King classic features Christopher Walken in Dead Zone - another classic that can't be missed.

Moving on to numbers, the obvious choice is The Number 23. Unfortunately, it was a bit rubbish, but it's good if you fancy a bit of a laugh at Jim Carrey's expense.

Finally, get number-tastic with Russell Crowe in his Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind – the true story about economist John Forbes Nash who tries to revolutionise the world of maths.

Unfortunately there are no films on release that predict tomorrow's Grand National winner, but you can still save money by getting the cheapest films when you compare DVD rental.
