THIS week we look into the disturbing fashion of axing bonus features on rental DVDs, highlight some exclusive movies coming up that are available at Blockbuster before anywhere else, and we waltz down the red carpet to announce the nominations for the MTV movie awards, and have a little ceremony of our own just for Tom Hanks.

Disney follows Fox and removes bonus content from rental DVDs

Following in the footsteps of studio giant Fox, Disney has announced that from next month they will start cutting extras and bonus features from their rental DVDs.

All is not lost, however. Unlike Fox, Disney is still offering the full DVD with all extras to rental companies, but they will offer the bonus-free versions at a lower price.

By forcing the rental companies to pay more for the full versions, it seems to be a case of passing the buck and avoiding a mass of complaint letters to Mickey Mouse Towers.

Disney's movies will start getting the chop from next month starting with Morning Light and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Whilst these may not sound like the kind of films that you'd want to see deleted scenes for anyway, the trend of cutting extras appears to be one that is catching on in Hollywood. We expect Disney won't be the last to hop on this particular bandwagon.

Early exclusives with Blockbuster DVD Rental

This week Blockbuster has announced a preview of some of its exclusive titles to rent.

Blockbuster's exclusive titles are available to rent before any other DVD Rental provider, and even before the film is available to buy in the shops.

First up on the list for this week is the new Daniel Craig film, Defiance, followed by a new release for next week, The Spirit.

Forthcoming titles given to Blockbuster exclusivity include The Wrestler, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Reader and Gran Torino.

MTV movie award nominations announced

This week also saw the nominations for the MTV movie awards announced. OK, so they're not the Oscars, but where else can you find a category for 'Best WTF Moment'?

Oddly rubbish movie, Twilight, has topped the chart for highest number of nominations, with seven, across eleven categories, including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Kiss. Slumdog Millionaire trails slightly with six nominations, followed by High School Musical 3.

A reason for these slightly dubious nominations more than probably lies in the fact that they were nominated by fans. The final winner will be decided by a fan vote too, and will be announced at the award ceremony on May 31.

Tom Hanks receives tribute

Last week saw Tom Hanks gracing the red carpet to the 36th Film Society of Lincoln Centre Gala Tribute where he was being honoured with the new Chaplin award.

While the name of the event may be a mouthful, it was Julia Roberts who proved to be the mouthiest of all, providing a speech littered with expletives and telling Tom she loved him a number of times.

While we may not have champagne suppers and glitzy dresses, here at Choose we've also decided to honour the acting delight that is Tom Hanks by recommending three of his finest films.

  • Big - One of Hanks' unforgettable roles as a 12-year-old in an adult's body.

  • Philadelphia - The legendary movie netted Tom Hanks an Oscar for his performance as Andrew Beckett - a man dismissed from his job after they discover he has AIDS.

  • The Green Mile - Based on a Stephen King book, it sees Hanks as a guard on Death Row.

All of the titles are available to rent, so add them to your online DVD rental queue now!
