Online DVD Rental News Roundup (18th Sep 09)
The new download-at-home movie service from Tesco and Microsoft, whose pecs won a place in the nation's heart, and a brand new competition from Blockbuster.T

IT'S a week of piracy but there's not a dodgy eyepatch in sight. First up this week are claims that French President is in deep water over a potential copyright scandal, the latest news from the ever-turbulent Pirate Bay saga and the latest new releases from Blockbuster.

Sarkozy accused of DVD piracy

WHEN Sarkozy isn't ruling France, making tabloid headlines or introducing new anti-piracy laws, he's, err, flouting anti-piracy laws (apparently).

According to French newspaper Le Canard Enchaine Sarkozy made 400 unauthorised copies of a documentary which were distributed amongst diplomats at a recent conference.

Reports say the President was initially given 50 copies by the distributor, which were then copied and distributed with a brand new cover sleeve, with the original manufacturer's logo removed.

Which hard-hitting documentary was it? None other than the 52 minute not-quite-a-runaway-smash, A Visage Decouvert: Nicolas Sarkozy. Yes. A documentary about himself.

If the tale is true, this is Sarkozy's second infraction against his own "three-strikes-and-you're-out" policy, after using a track by Brooklyn duo MGMT without permission in online videos.

In case you're wondering, neither Blockbuster nor LoveFilm have A visage decouvert: Nicolas Sarkozy currently available to rent. Sacre bleu!

The latest news on The Pirate Bay

IN further pirating news, claims are afoot that evidence used in a recent court case against torrent site, The Pirate Bay, was faked.

In August, anti-piracy group BREIN, a Dutch organisation founded by copyright holders, took The Pirate Bay to court demanding a block for users from The Netherlands.

BREIN won the case, but an appeal lodged this week claims a report submitted to the court contained fabricated information.

Acting on behalf of The Pirate Bay was lawyer Ernst-Jan Louwers, who said the report was: "fake, deceptive and completely unreliable.", according to Torrentfreak.com.

He then went on to dispute a number of facts within the report itself. Meanwhile, the case continues.

The appeal comes just a week after a furore involving a potential conflict of interest after one of the judges working on a separate appeal for The Pirate Bay was found to be a stockholder in the up-and-coming music application, Spotify.

Can we resist a nautical pun? No, we can't. It's never plain sailing for The Pirate Bay boys.

Blockbuster's new releases

FINALLY, this week, for those of you who like your DVDs un-pirated, crystal clear, and delivered straight to your front door, you can check out some of the latest releases from Blockbuster.

First up is Hell Ride, both directed by and starring Larry Bishop. Hell Ride is a tribute to the popular bikers films in the 60s and 70s, and pokes fun at the cultish American B-movies.

This black comedy has tattoos, naked girls and guns a-go-go. All without an ounce of seriousness.

If gritty dramas are more your thing, look no further than Traitor, starring Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce, which has the FBI tracking a former US soldier involved in a suspected terrorist organisation.

If you're a fan of the box-set, Season One of Dollhouse is also available to rent. Seemingly the flavour of the month, the TV series devised by Buffy creator Joss Whedon follows an underground organisation called the Dollhouse who wipe people's personalities and lease them out to clients for whatever purpose they require.

You can check out Blockbuster's new releases at blockbuster.co.uk.
