THIS week sees a novel way of dealing with late returns of DVDs, the question of free movie streaming and the best Woody Allen films to add to your online DVD rental queue.

A new meaning to late fees

EVERYONE hates late fees, but for some Texan residents, a tardy DVD return can mean more than a bit of a ticking off and a fine.

Mike Bell, the owner of Video Hits, a DVD rental store in Wylie, Texas, has begun to file charges with the local courts, who are issuing arrest warrants for those who fail to return their DVDs on time.

All late returners are issued with a letter explaining the process. They then have 10 days to pay a fine - one DVD renter paid a whopping $870! If all fines aren’t paid, the case then goes to the local court, and perpetrators are slapped in handcuffs on theft charges.

Of course a simple way to avoid life in the clink is to rent DVDs online. Companies such as LoveFilm and Blockbuster have no late fees, so you can rest safe in the knowledge that you won't be sharing a cell with Big Bubba any time soon.

Free films?

WITH the rise of music-streaming sites such as last.fm and the ad-supported (and superb) Spotify, what does the future hold for streaming full-length feature movies?

Unfortunately, not much at all if the experts are to be believed. Movie-streaming is pretty commonplace on the internet and you can even get add-ons for your web browsers which will tell you where you can stream or download a particular movie when you visit IMDb.com or Amazon. Unfortunately, it's still illegal.

For those guilt-ridden souls, a legal alternative just isn't available right now. "The number of people that would consume any one film for, say, £1, would never be sufficient to support the current level of investment in films," says Liz Bales, Director-General of the Industry Trust, a copyright protection organisation.

Some experts are proposing a "tip jar" system, similar to Radiohead's free album download where downloaders were asked to pay what they liked to download it, but with movies available elsewhere for free, it seems an unlikely prospect.

Even charging a monthly fee for an ad-free service, similar to Spotify seems pointless, when you can just rent DVDs through the post for a similar price instead.

Blockbuster announces top Woody Allen films

To tie in with the DVD release of Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Blockbuster has donned its favourite black-rimmed spectacles and revealed their list of top Woody Allen films to add to your rental queue.

It's hardly a shock really, then, that Vicky Cristina Barcelona tops the list. The Oscar-winner features Scarlet Johansson and Penelope Cruz in this romantic drama set in Spain.

It's not just the recent ones, either, the 1977 classic, Annie Hall, features on the list, often argued to be Allen's finest film alongside Manhattan.

Even the oddball releases haven't been forgotten. The 1973 flick Sleeper making in which Allen wakes up 200 years in the future and falls in love with a woman he hates (Diane Keaton). If that's not weird enough, there are robots, giant fruits and orgasmatrons to tickle your fancy. Nice.

All of these are available to rent from Blockbuster DVD rental or you can compare online DVD rental here!
