This week sees LoveFilm and Blockbuster go head to head with new online DVD rental marketing campaigns, reasons why gift vouchers may not be the right choice, and the chance to win with Blockbuster.
LoveFilm sets out to divide and conquer online DVD rental
ONLINE DVD Rental giant LoveFilm is embarking on a new campaign to boost membership numbers.
LoveFilm has reported a 40% rise in members since the beginning of October, giving the recession a well-needed kick in the pants.
While they recently reached the landmark of 1 million members, LoveFilm will be hiring outside help in the form of digital agencies Quant and Presky Maves, in the hope of gaining even more members over the current months.
Current plans for the task include targeting former customers, and improving word-of-mouth promotion from current LoveFilm users.
Nearly half of all online DVD rental subscribers currently use LoveFilm. If you're not a member yet, you can give them a test-run using their free trial service.
The free trial lasts for 14 days, and membership starts from £3.91 per month. Check out what we think of LoveFilm DVD Rental in our review.
LoveFilm love letters
While we're on the subject of LoveFilm, it hit the news last week after a particularly pervy and amorous man decided to woo the subject of his desires by giving her a letter boasting of his sexual prowess, and chucking in a £50 LoveFilm gift voucher to go with it.
Kenneth Mathieson, 44, from Peebles, Scotland, who was placed on the Sexual Offender's Register in 2005 for an unrelated incident, has been put on a sexual rehabilitation programme after continually harassing a local checkout girl.
While LoveFilm vouchers make great gifts for a loved one, it's definitely best to make sure that they love you back first.
Blockbuster offers Iceland shoppers free DVD rental
Fancy some frozen food stuffs to go with your film? While vol-au-vents and turkey drumsticks aren't the conventional finger foods to enjoy with the latest flick, there's yet another reason for mum to go to Iceland, and thankfully, it doesn't involve Kerry Katona.
Iceland has teamed up with Blockbuster and is offering a free DVD rental to Iceland's Bonus Card holders.
After the initial deal is over, members can take advantage of a 2-for-1 rental deal.
The offer will run for the next 6 months, and Bonus Card holders can expect to receive something via the mail.
And finally... if you want to win something this week...
It's oddly loved by German teenagers, but to celebrate the release of vampire flick Twilight on DVD and Blu-Ray, Blockbuster is giving away three copies of the movie, along with the soundtrack too.
To be in with a chance of winning, dust off the fangs, don your finest cape, and slink your way over to the Blockbuster website or e-mail competitions@blockbuster.com with the answer to the following question: What substance keeps vampires alive? a) Garlic, b) Flour, or c) Blood?
The closing date is 11th May, so there's still plenty of time to get your entries in.
