Weekly DVD Rental News Roundup (03 JUL 2009)
Helen Storey's weekly roundup of DVD rental news (and games rental news!), featuring the DVD retailers who are beating the recession, predictions for the next five years on where the online DVD rental business will go, some interesting Catholic flicks, and the best Farrah Fawcett films to add to your rental queue.

The most controversial film, how games rentals are staying resilient in the recession and Michael Jackson on DVD.

'Life of Brian' still most Controversial, says Lovefilm

THIRTY years after its release Monty Python's 'Life of Brian' has been voted the most controversial film of all time by Lovefilm users.

The epic comedy about Jesus doppelganger Brian of Nazareth beat controversy favourites 'A Clockwork Orange', 'The Last House on the Left', 'The War Game' and 'Pink Flamingos'.

Most of the films were banned for their content. 'The War Game', for example, wasn't shown for nineteen years after its proposed release date in 1966, after the BBC branded it "too horrifying for the medium of broadcasting".

However, it seems the protests surrounding Monty Python's film have stuck in the collective memory and it probably didn't hurt that Glasgow only lifted their ban on the film a few weeks ago.

Blockbuster get 'Knowing' first... spooky

BLOCKBUSTER have been celebrating being the first to get 'Knowing' on DVD this week.

The Nicholas Cage thriller, in which an astrophysics professor stumbles upon a trio of terrifying predictions which he is unable to stop, will be available to rent from the 20th of July.

Could Blockbuster have had access to some shadowy information to get these early DVDs? Probably not.

'Knowing' was described by many critics as "no bad" and according to a critic at Empire magazine, "you're better off not knowing".

Rentals keep Games Resilient in Recession

A U.S survey has found that rentals are helping to keep the games market resilient in the recession.

According to Nielson, which owns The Hollywood Reporter, although half of gamers claimed to be negatively affected by the recession, 41% said they would continue to spend the same amount on games.

However, the survey also found that the recession was driving sales in used games and game rental subscriptions.

No similar figures exist for the UK but its fair to expect similar trends here.

Moe admits to DVD theft

MOE Sizlack, better known as the bartender from 'The Simpsons', has admitted to DVD rental theft.

In a recent episode before proposing to his new girlfriend, Moe says: "This makes more sense than anything I've ever done. Well, other than keeping all my Netflix movies and saying the post office lost them.'"

MJ in straight-to-DVD

FINALLY, and following popular demand (not really), some Michael Jackson DVD rental news.

The storm surrounding the artist's death has led to the uncovering of cinematic gems such as 'Miss Cast Away', a straight-to-DVD movie in which Jackson spoofed his role in 'Men in Black II'.

‘Miss Cast Away’ also features Charlie Schlatter, better known as Jesse from 'Diagnosis Murder'.

Unfortunately, we couldn't find 'Miss Cast Away' to rent at any major online DVD rental services (though LoveFilm do promise to source any DVD you can't find in their collection).

However, fans could try 'The Wiz' released 1978 in which Jackson plays the scarecrow or the season 3 episode of 'The Simpsons' in which he voiced the mental patient Leon Kompowsky.
