BIG news for LoveFilm this week, as the firm announces its intention to sell up, we jump on the MP expenses bandwagon and tell you which MPs love their DVDs, and a great new competition from Blockbuster.

LoveFilm sell up

If you've got some spare cash you can take a punt on LoveFilm this week after owners announced that the company was up for sale for an estimated £200m.

With 1.2m customers, LoveFilm is the largest online DVD rental company, and accounts for over half of all DVD rentals by post.

Over the years, LoveFilm has previously been involved in a number of mergers and take-overs, including Webflix, and Amazon, which still holds a 32% share in the company.

LoveFilm are remaining tight-lipped on the situation for now: "The board is considering a number of approaches and is exploring options on behalf of the group and its shareholders. The company cannot comment any further," a spokesperson for LoveFilm said.

Analysts predict that it will be a private equity firm who will make the purchase.

The change in ownership is not expected to have any major impact on customers.

For now, if you've not got the dough, you're probably just best off renting DVDs from them. Check out our review of LoveFilm DVD rental.

MPs claims for DVDs

When MPs aren't claiming expenses for their brand new kitchens or for rental of their second homes, they're claiming for DVDs. Or at least one of them is.

It was revealed yesterday that George Osborne, MP for Tatton, claimed £47 on his expenses for two DVDs in 2005.

What exciting, rip-roaring Hollywood blockbusters were they? They were DVDs of his very own speech on "values for taxpayers money".

Other DVD-watching MPs in the expenses doghouse include:

  • Ian Austin - MP for Dudley North, who claimed a television and DVD player totalling £1000.
  • Martyn Jones - MP for Clwyd South, who claimed expenses of £128 for a new DVD player
  • Jacqui Smith - Well, not exactly her, but we couldn't forget the clanger her husband, Richard Timney, dropped after claiming for the rental of two pornographic movies.

...and finally, if you want to win something this week...

Put on your flak helmets and get yourself down to Blockbuster.co.uk. To celebrate the release of the hit Max Manus: Man of War, they are giving away 10 DVDs and posters signed by the star of the film, Aksel Hennie.

The film, which is based on a true story, tells the tale of the leader of the notorious Oslo Gang, whose battle against Nazi occupation in Norway helped to free their country, and lead to Max Manus becoming a hero.

For your chance to win, all you need to do is answer the following question: Which recently released war movie revolves around a plot to assassinate Adolph Hitler? A: Valkyrie, B: Defiance, C: War, D: Warlords

Go to blockbuster.co.uk/competitionhome/competition.aspx before 13th July for your chance to win!
