IN a busy week for DVD and games renters, we have the lowdown on Cinema Paradiso's latest Blu-ray announcement, a spooky LoveFilm and Resident Evil 5 tie-in, and the latest news on Fox's move to cut all bonus features from their rental DVDs.

Cinema Paradiso strengthens independence with Blu-ray titles

Cinema Paradiso has announced that they are to expand their DVD rental service by offering the newest releases in Blu-ray format.

They are the latest online DVD rental company to hop on the Blu-ray rental bandwagon, which will come as a welcome addition to film fans who crave their cinematic treats in High-Definition.

The better news is that their prices remain unchanged, with the lowest DVD or Blu-ray rental package sitting at a wallet-busting £4.89 per month.

For your less-than-a-fiver deal, you can rent up to 2 DVDs per month, with one title at a time. What we love about Cinema Paradiso DVD rental, is that if you don't use up both of your allotted rental slots, they will roll over to the next month.

With Blu-ray titles still being fairly new, they come at a premium price, so renting is the best way to give the recession a well-needed slap in the face, while still enjoying your HD goodness.

LoveFilm launches Resident Evil 5 game rental

There's evil afoot. And for once it's nothing to do with this blasted credit crunch.

Lovefilm has teamed up with videogame giant Capcom to celebrate the launch of over-the-shoulder-shooter Resident Evil 5, by offering the title up for rent.

Grab your controllers, put on your best zombie-blasting outfit and stalk your way over to LoveFilm, where their unlimited DVD & Game rental service starts from £10.76 per month, with one disc out at a time.

The awaited sequel is available on both Xbox 360 and the PS3, and is practically guaranteed to create a number of Resident Evil 5 widows in its wake.

With outstanding graphics, excellent replay value, and the ability to play via an online network, great reviews are already flooding in, so make sure you don't miss out.

Just make sure you have the curtains closed first!

Fox attempts sales boost by cutting extras from DVD rental discs

Finally this week, a kick in the teeth for DVD rental customers everywhere.

It seems that Murdoch's multi-million dollar company, Fox, is feeling the pinch. In an attempt to boost sales of retail DVDs, they have unceremoniously axed all bonus content from forthcoming DVD titles for rent.

This means that if you want the commentaries, bonus footage and easter eggs, you'll have to actually go out and buy the title.
The first flick to get the extras chopped is Slumdog Millionaire, and the cut will include all new releases, with the rather odd exception of Marley and Me.

In a statement from Fox, they said: "For rental customers, we're delivering a theatrical experience in the home while promoting upcoming releases. For retail customers, we're offering a premium product that expands the entertainment experience of that particular property to further enhance ownership."

Simple as that, eh, Fox?

Whilst the move may not bother those of the ilk that believe deleted scenes are deleted for a reason, it might just be a bit of a sickener for the die-hard film buffs.

Whether or not it makes a difference to sales remains to be seen, but we can't help but feel it's a bit of a sneaky move to make.
