THIS week sees a quite bizarre censoring uproar around new release, Lesbian Vampire Killers, cinema giant Cineworld announce a 33% rise in profit and a new LoveFilm poll reveal the nation's favourite time-travel flick.
Tesco censor lesbian vampires
TESCO has made a boob this week after censoring out the cover of new DVD release, Lesbian Vampire Killers.
Stickers have been placed over the word 'Lesbian' and part of a cleavage.
The distributors of the DVD, Momentum, have said they were reacting to requests from retailers but stockists have denied asking for the title to be censored.
The stickers placed on the cover state: "Warning: may display sexually suggestive cover image" and "Warning: contains explicitly fit bloodsucking hotties!"
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Borders are just some of the retailers which are selling the censored version, but all have denied that the stickers obscuring the wording were placed at their request.
A spokesperson for Tesco said: "We asked the supplier to change the picture to make it more appropriate as we are a family retailer. We did not suggest that they amend the wording."
With a paltry 35% on rottentomatoes.com and plagued by bad reviews, perhaps it's not the cover that's the problem but the DVD inside.
Cineworld reports strong profits
Cineworld were able to give the recession a well-needed kick in the chops this week after it reported a 33% rise in profit.
The cinema giant posted a profit before tax of £11.6m, which rose from £8.7m last year. The rise in popularity of 3D films has been partially attributed to the success of the chain in addition to box office hits like Slumdog Millionaire and the new Harry Potter movie.
Although ticket prices for cinemas have been on the rise, the recession has prompted cash-strapped consumers to visit cinemas as a cheaper alternative for an evening out.
Stephen Wiener, chief executive for Cineworld said: "This is a very good set of results which has been achieved despite an extremely challenging consumer environment. We remain confident that our business proposition will deliver value for money to our customers."
For even greater value, you can rent all the latest DVD releases (perhaps from Blockbuster, our top pick for new releases) without stepping foot outside and spending an obscene amount of money on a bag of Minstrels.
Back to the Future named best time-travel movie
Another week, another LoveFilm poll. This week LoveFilm have surveyed to find out the nation's favourite time-travel flick to celebrate the release of The Time-Traveller's Wife.
So if you're sick of 2009, jump in your DeLorean and set the speedo to 88mph because where we're going, we don't need roads.
That's right, everyone's favourite trilogy, Back to the Future, came top in the poll with a whopping 40% of the vote.
Coming in second place, and he said he'd be back, is Arnie in Terminator, who bagged 12% in the survey, while Donnie Darko pulled third in the ranks.
Bringing up the rear was Bruce Willis' 12 Monkeys, Ashton Kutcher flick The Butterfly Effect and, finally, Bill and Ted's Most Excellent Adventure.
If time-travelling isn't your bag, head over to LoveFilm and grab any of the flicks mentioned above from the comfort of your own sofa.
