Online DVD Rental News Roundup (13 MAR 2009)
Helen Storey rounds up the latest online DVD rental news and features the top DVD and Blu-ray rental titles and find out who the winners (or losers) were at this years Golden Raspberry Awards.

This week the DVD rental news roundup sees an odd combination of shopping goods, both good and bad news for Bond lovers everywhere, and we get a little bit closer to some of Gwyneth's pals.

What have Blu-ray, DVD Rental and plums got in common?

No, get your mind out of the gutter. This week Blu-ray, DVD Rental and plums have all featured in a virtual basket of popular goods with the nations consumers.

Compiled annually by the Office for National Statistics, the theoretical shopping basket reflects the kinds of goods that people are currently buying.

Intriguingly enough, online DVD rental has managed to kick standard DVD rental out of last year's virtual basket, which proves that we're far happier getting our flicks by post.

It also gives a quick kick to the chops for those who said that Blu-ray would never catch on.

If you want to take advantage of both formats, Blockbuster offers Blu-ray and DVD rental from £4.88 per month, LoveFilm offers Blu-ray and DVD rental from £3.91 per month, and Cinema Paradiso offer DVD and Blu-ray rental from £4.89

Bond gets blown-up, HD style

Next up is great news for Bond fans everywhere. Get out your sharp suit, and imagine your Ford Focus is actually an Aston Martin, because four of the top Bond titles were released on Blu-ray last week.

You can now watch Goldfinger, Moonraker, The World is Not Enough and Daniel Craig's second Bond film Quantum of Solace in High-Definition.

While some claim Quantum of Solace to be a bit drab, it more than makes up for it with its action-packed scenes and great extra features.

You can pick up all of these titles, as well as all other available Bond discs at Lovefilm, Blockbuster and Tesco.

Quantum of Solace release finds Craig deadliest Bond yet

And while we're on the subject, if you've ever fancied yourself as one of Bond's famous girls, think again.

In line with the release of Quantum of Solace on Blu-ray and DVD, The Times have indulged in some highly scientific research, and discovered that being Daniel Craig's squeeze can be a very deadly affair indeed.

Of the Bond girls who have done the dirty with Craig, all three of them have met their demise by the end of the film.

Some of the more notable Bond girl deaths over the years involve suffocation by gold paint, massacre by piranha, and drowning in crude oil.

So whilst being on the arm of a dashing Bond may be a nice idea, it's probably best to just rent the DVD instead.

Hollywood heavyweights share favourite flicks with Gywneth

Gwyneth Paltrow has been taking some time out from the promotion of her new film Two Lovers, starring weird-beard Joaquin Phoenix, to speak to some of her pals about their favourite movie rentals.

Writing for her newsletter, GOOP (yes, she has her very own newsletter), she claims to be rubbish at movie history, but able to do the whole rap from Revenge of The Nerds. We still can't work out if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Luckily she has some famous director friends who know a bit more than she does.

First up is legend Steven Spielberg. Top films on his list include The Godfather, Captains Courageous, The Best Years of Our Lives, The Searchers and Tootsie.

Sofia Coppola, of The Virgin Suicides fame also had Oscar winner Tootsie on her list, but added The Last Picture Show, Chris Rock - Never Scared, Heartbreak Kid and Let the Right One In.

Finally, Two Lovers director James Gray cites his favourites as Rocco and His Brothers, The 400 Blows, Singin' In The Rain, Tokyo Story and The Godfather/Godfather Part II, stating that you can't separate the two, so it only counts as one. Err, OK.

While they may be lacking in maths skills, you can't deny they know film.

Add these films to your rental queue by signing up after you compare DVD rental sites. Don't forget to check out the DVD rental free trials too!
