THIS week sees bad news if you happen to be a gamer, more news in the this-is-getting-silly ongoing tale of The Pirate Bay and the best war films to stick in your rental queue.
Gamers "fat and sad"
WORLD of Warcraft fans, perhaps its time to re-sheath the sword and say goodbye to your favourite elves. People who play computer games are fat, around 35 years old and most likely depressed, according to a new study in the USA.
The study, conducted by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University and Andrews University, analysed research from 552 American adults. It discovered that the average gamer's BMI (body mass index) was higher than that of a non-gamer.
Researchers said: "Male video-game players spend more time using the Internet and rely more on Internet-community social support". The research also showed that gamers have: "a greater number of poor mental health days".
Whilst playing games can sometimes be fun, perhaps it's time some gamers stepped outside to enjoy the last of the English summer.
If you just can't pry your sweaty hands from your joystick for a few days, then you can try a games rental service like SwapGame, who will deliver your digital satisfaction straight through your letterbox.
The Pirate Bay flounders again
THE latest instalment in The Pirate Bay saga sees the site back online after its former service provider was forced to remove the site.
Internet service provider Black Internet were threatened with a fine from Stockholm district court if the site wasn't removed.
The long-standing tenacity of the site, however, has proved to be fruitful again, when they returned within hours with a new provider.
In a press release which parodies a famous Churchill speech, it claimed: "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the baywords.org, we shall fight on the /. and on the digg, we shall fight in the courts; we shall never surrender."
Following the sale of the infamous torrent site to Swedish company Global Gaming Factory, trading in shares has ceased and rumours speculate that the firm's chairman, Magnus Bergman, has resigned. The rumour mill are also creating whispers that Global Gaming Factory don't have enough money to complete the sale.
Whatever happens, it's obvious that the waters are still murky for The Pirate Bay team but it's not so clear as to whether their ship has well and truly sunk.
The UK's favourite war films
FINALLY, it's time to don your flak helmets and go over the top following a LoveFilm poll of its members' favourite war films.
Saving Private Ryan battled its way into the top spot with 21% of the vote. The Oscar-winning war epic starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon stands proud at the top, and rightly so.
Lagging behind slightly is the 1963 classic. The Great Escape, which dug a tunnel straight into second place with 11% of the vote.
In third place, and forging a top three Spielberg-directed hat-trick was Schindler's List, closely followed by Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon.
Wolfgang Petersen's German epic, Das Boot, which came in ninth was the only non-English language flick to grab a place in the top 10.
War. What is it good for? Making films, apparently.
