THE Exorcist has been voted the most disturbing film of all time by Lovefilm users.
Nearly four decades after its original release, the everyday story of ordinary demoniacally-possessed folk starring Linda Blair clearly still has the power to disturb despite the slew of shockers that have followed.
Ultra-violent A Clockwork Orange came second in the Lovefilm poll.
Copycat crimes in the UK and threats on the family of director Stanley Kubrick following the film's release led to it being withdrawn from distribution for some years.
Genuinely disgusting
The survey was commissioned to mark the release of the genuinely disgusting movie The Human Centipede.
The film follows two American backpackers in Europe - we're betting European tourism hasn't taken such a beating since Hostel - who fall into the clutches of a psychotic surgeon intent on grafting their bodies together for - again, we're guessing - less than reasonable reasons.
Worryingly, the film claims to be the first of a trilogy.
Helen Cowley, editor at Lovefilm, said: "As much as we wince and turn away from what's on screen, every film lover secretly loves a good horror flick.
"This list of disturbing films truly showcases the extreme lengths that film-makers will go to in order to continually shock audiences, but it's great to also see some classics in there - which arguably changed the way horror films are crafted for today's audiences."
Other films in the Lovefilm top ten include serial killer flicks The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Se7en (recently made available to stream on the Lovefilm site).
The snowball of despair in 'drugs are bad' movie Requiem For A Dream also gets a look in as does the pure chaos of Event Horizon.
Non-linear or unusual violence-soaked narratives are well-represented in the form of Irreversible, The Blair Witch Project and Antichrist.
