Review of 1DVD DVD Rental
OK, so 1DVD is not Lovefilm.com, but being small is not always a bad thing.
1DVD Rental's site is colourful and fun to use, with a lengthy list of well thought-out genres to make browsing easier. The 1DVD catalogue size is quite small in comparison to some of the bigger companies, and turnaround can be quite slow at times but 1DVD do offer competitive subscription package prices, especially for the 4 and 5 disc packages.
We're very pleased to see that by paying upfront for a year on any of the 1DVD packages, you effectively get 2 months free. A cautionary note on this though: With smaller DVD rental companies dropping like flies in the wake of juggernauts like Lovefilm and Blockbuster, remember that if 1DVD fail to keep their heads above water, you won't be getting anything back from the administrators! At least if you are paying 1DVD monthly, you can't lose more than twenty quid max.
There are a few disconcerting signs that 1DVD may be feeling the strain of the competition, with both their 'Coming Soon' and 'Recent Releases' pages both worryingly empty. Whether this is laziness on the part of the 1DVD site owners, or a sign of stormcloud on the horizon remains to be seen, and it's something we'll keep our eye on closely.
We should point out that the actual 1DVD film catalogue is still pleasingly up-to-date and includes just about all the popular recent releases we'd expect.
Doom-mongering aside, there is a lot to like about 1DVD and we would love to see them become serious contenders to the big-boys, but they'll need to pump up their catalogue size and improve title turnaround if they are to stand any chance.
