WHILST we had previously reported that owing to DVDChoice's location in Northern Ireland, users in mainland Britain should think twice about signing up for the service if fast turnaround of titles was important to them, we're pleased to correct ourselves on that one.
Sorting hub and Saturday processing
Belfast - just a few miles from DVDChoice's headquarters - is in fact one of Royal Mail's main airport sorting hubs, so users in England, Scotland and Wales shouldn't have to worry - especially as DVD Choice now offers Saturday processing and guarantees same-day turnaround.
It is unfortunate (and dare we say ironic) then that DVD Choice is, well, so lacking in choice.
With a rather ho-hum 2500 or so titles in their catalogue, the DVD choice at DVDChoice does feel a little sparse. However - to put that figure in perspective - 2500 titles is roughly the equivalent of an average high-street video shop's catalogue and nobody complains about that!
Small is better
On the plus side, where DVDs contain a bonus disc DVD Choice will send this out along with the main disc. That's something we'd love to see all DVD rental companies do and is perhaps one of the reasons small is sometimes better.
The only other DVD rental provider that sends bonus discs along with the main rental disc is Blockbuster DVD Rental.
DVDChoice has now increased it's number of DVD rental packages from just two unlimited plans to now include an extra 3 limited plans as well.
Also, we do like DVDChoice's option of annual subscription fees which save you a bit over the monthly rates but, in reality, are there really enough films in DVD Choice's movie catalogue to actually last you a year?
New DVD search tool
The new DVD Choice website is an improvement on the previous incarnation, allowing you to search and find films far easier.
There is however a rather endearing Mom 'n' Pop ambience to the DVD Choice website with its sidelines in Disc Repair and the new DVD price comparison tool that allows you to search (but not browse) for a DVD and find the cheapest online store selling it. A little incongruous, but it's nothing to hold against the company.
Strong customer support
They are not the biggest, nor the flashiest online DVD rental site out there, but DVD Choice does offer a good rental service despite the limited catalogue.
With strong customer support and what appears to be a dogged determination to stick two fingers up at Lovefilm, Blockbuster and the other big boys, we're happy to see a small player like DVD Choice holding its own in this increasingly cut-throat sector.
DVDChoice.co.uk gets two-thumbs up for:
DVDChoice's family-friendly 'Browse by Certificate' option which makes choosing movies for the kids a lot easier.
