STOP PRESS! While we reported earlier this year that DVD To Home had gone out of business, they appear to be back, giving no clue as to where they disappeared to or why. We strongly discourage anyone thinking of joining this service to do so, and instead to explore and compare the other, more reliable DVD rental services available.
IT seems they forgot to employ a designer when building DVDtoHome - so not only does the site look a little ramshackle, it is also unfortunately very difficult to use.
Poor search engine
DVDtoHome's list of DVD rental categories is also perhaps a little too much on the vague side to make browsing enjoyable, and the site is let down by its very poor search engine.
DVDtoHome does however have a decent range of titles to choose from, but don't be fooled by their rather misleading 62,000 DVDs claim, which refers to the physical number of discs they possess and NOT the number of DVD titles in their catalogue. There are reports that the actual figure is more like 15,000 titles, but even that figure seems suspect when you start drilling down into DVDToHome's catalogue of films.
We suspect their range of adult titles to rent - if which there are, admittedly, a fair few - is what keeps this site going. It is surely not their list of recent releases!
Updated infrequently
Worryingly we've noticed that DVDtoHome's 'New Releases' list has not been updated for many months.
In fact, the Recent Release list itself looks way more outdated than that, boasting such sizzling hot titles as Alfie and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, both of which were released on DVD years ago. Feel free to tell us otherwise, but it really appears as if DVDtoHome is no longer adding new titles their DVD catalogue and hasn't been doing so for quite some time.
On the plus side, with just a few thousand subscribers to the DVDtoHome service you shouldn't have a problem getting the titles at the top of your queue straight away.
Thrown-together
However, there is something undecidably two-bit and tumbledown about DVDToHome - from their thrown-together website and misleading claims, to the floundering, outsourced "receptionist" on the difficult-to-find phoneline.
Our verdict would be to keep well away. There are better and cheaper DVD rental services out there.
DVDToHome gets two-thumbs up for:
Managing to still exist while being vastly inferior to the majority of DVD rental services out there. DVDToHome must be doing something right.
