DVD rental giants Lovefilm continue to lead the pack by being the most innovative and forward-thinking of all the DVD rental service providers.

These fantastic pay as you go DVD rental deals get discs to your door when you want them and come with some enticing extras too.

Works on credits

The Lovefilm Pay As You Go DVD rental system works on a credit basis: buy a bunch of film credits and then, when the mood strikes and you think of a film you want to watch, log into the site and rent the movie or game you want.

It works out as £2 a rental for a DVD or £2.50 if you buy credits that can be used for either DVDs or games.

This is a far more familiar way of renting DVDs and we have to applaud Lovefilm for taking a punt on this, especially as it will likely lead to many users who currently subscribe to their unlimited DVD rental packages downgrading to this potentially cheaper option.

Of course, Lovefilm are hoping it will bring back the deserters of the service who found that unlimited DVD rental didn't fit in with their lifestyles.

If you often find that you forget to send back DVDs for weeks at a time or only have time to watch a film occasionally this could also be a much more cost effective way to rent.

Free extras

When you sign up to an ordinary Lovefilm account you get a free trial (a 30-day free trial if you sign up through this site) so we're pleased to see that they're extending the same hospitality to their pay as you go customers.

You'll get a free bonus disc with the cheapest option, a copy of Time Out's '1000 films to change your life' when you buy 6 DVD credits and 2 cinema tickets when you go for DVDs and games.

To get your freebies you just have to register for the PAYG credits and put at least ten discs in your rental list. The extra will be sent out when Lovefilm have sent out your first disc.

It's also worth noting that you're entitled to your money back if you're not satisfied with the service.

All you need to do is let Lovefilm know that you're unhappy within 7 days of signing up by emailing moneyback@lovefilm.com.

3 PAYG DVD rental deals

Lovefilm pay as you go dvd rental credits expire within 3 months of you buying them and once you've used them up your account will automatically top up again.

If you run out before the expiry date you can buy more credits.

It's a shame that Lovefilm have ditched their No Auto Top-Up packages - this isn't a truly no-ties DVD rental deal - but automatic top-up is a handy feature which saves fiddling about making multiple transactions so it's not too bad.
