Review of LoveFilm PAYG DVD Rental
STOP PRESS! These pay as you go dvd rental packages are not available through the main Lovefilm site so make sure you sign up through our links.
DVD rental giants Lovefilm continue to lead the pack by being the most innovative and forward-thinking of all the DVD rental service providers.
In response to the complaint that sometimes you just don't need movies through the postbox every day of the week, Lovefilm has listened to its customers and introduced a fantastic pay as you go DVD rental solution.
Works on credits
The Lovefilm Pay As You Go DVD rental system works on a credit basis: buy a bunch of film credits and then, when the mood strikes and you think of a film you want to watch, log into the site and rent the movie you want. It should appear through your postbox the next day.
This is a far more familiar, and in a way less stressful, way of renting DVD's, and we have to applaud Lovefilm for taking a punt on this, especially as it will likely lead to many users who currently subscribe to their unlimited DVD rental packages downgrading to this potentially cheaper dvd rental option.
Of course, Lovefilm are hoping it will bring back the deserters of the service who found that unlimited DVD rental didn't fit in with their lifestyles.
After all, this Pay As You Go DVD rental system is far more akin to how we normally rent DVD's. It just requires a bit more planning, as you'll only receive your film a day or two after deciding you want it.
2 DVD Rental Offers
Lovefilm offer two types of PAYG rental packages: Auto Top-Up and Non-Auto Top Up.
Naturally, the Auto Top-Up DVD rental packages - which credit you with a certain number of DVD's for a flat fee, then rebills you automatically at the end of six months - works out cheapest, with single DVD rentals coming in at as little as £1.95 each.
The Non-Auto Top-Up packages expire after 6 months whether you have used up all your credits or not, but you won't be rebilled at the end of the period.
The pre-rental prices, when broken down, start at around £2.40 per rental going up to £3 per rental on the cheapest package.
Unfortunately, the Lovefilm Pay As You Go packages are for DVDs only. You can't yet use the service to rent games.
You can read a full review of the Lovefilm DVD rental service, but if you want to sign up for the Lovefilm pay as you go dvd rental packages you will have to enter from the sign-up link on this page, as these packages are NOT accessible from the main Lovefilm site.
LoveFilm Pay As You Go gets two-thumbs up for:
Listening to its customers and providing a pay as you go DVD rental model that suits occasional movie watchers.

Customer Reviews
Remember, the customer reviews below are subjective (and are not the opinions of ChooseDVDRental.co.uk).
SLD from London writes... 10/01/2009 "Great prices on the larger Auto top-up packages, less than £2 per DVD.
I've been doing this for a while and it's usually very good, although rare that you receive one of your top choices within about 3 months of putting them on your list! Depends how often you watch the films I guess, I go through about 1 or 2 a week.
However, beware of any free credit offers or promotions, as every time I try to use a bonus credit - even loyalty ones from Lovefilm themselves - they always take away an extra one of my pre-paid credits, then customer services takes about 10 emails and another month to pay it back to my account. This has now happened 3 times!
It can be a bit of a con if you don't watch your account like a hawk. They're sneaky at getting their money back on the cheaper packages!"
Jackie Fuller from Stevenage writes... 04/10/2007 "This is exactly what I had been wanting Lovefilm to do for ages. I had cancelled my DVD rental account with them because I just didn't watch enough films to warrant the expense, even though I thought the Lovefilm service itself was really good. But now I am back with them on this pay per rent system and so far so good. Definitely recommended for anyone who doesn't have time to watch films ALL the time."
