THERE is something quite charming about the simplicity and honesty of MovieConnect DVD rental, especially with so few smaller, independent DVD rental services left.
Simple and easy-to-use
MoveieConnect make no exaggerated claims, and run their operation with a simple and very easy to use website. And, with a DVD catalogue of over 35,000 movies you shouldn't struggle to find the film you want so long as it's not too obscure (you'd have to turn to Lovefilm, with its 65,000 titles, to ensure you had access to every single DVD available in the UK).
We were disappointed though that MovieConnect's TV series selection lacked some of our favourites, and more recently we've heard a few bad reports of MovieConnect's apparent tardiness in sending out titles.
In terms of how the service works, MovieConnect's 'browse' feature is slick, working like a trimmed down eBay-style category selector, so you first select your genre, then your sub-genre and so on. Unfortunately it does mean that there is no way to browse by cover shot (which is ultimately how we all browse when we go to the video store). It's a little like visiting the back room at the video store, where all the movies are in black boxes with just the title on the spine!
No cover shots
We first made this criticism of the Movieconnect service over 3 years ago and sadly nothing has changed, despite the ever looming threat from giants like Lovefilm and Blockbuster breathing down the necks of smaller operators like Movieconnect. Fortunately when you mouse-over the movie names, you do get a neat description of the film and, lo-and-behold, a cover shot! Come on Movieconnect, you have the artwork - let us see it!
Our main gripe with MovieConnect at the moment is their rather shaky customer support.
While they do employ a ticketing system which at least ensures you can track your support enquiries, we've found their responses to these tickets to be slow and their actual support barely adequate.
If Movieconnect want to compete against the big boys like Lovefilm and Blockbuster, they'll have to work on the efficiency of their customer service and seriously jack up the browsability of the MovieConnect site. What's more a small player like this simply cannot afford to offer a sub-par DVD Rental service.
Reasonable prices
Still, we applaud MovieConnect DVD rental for offering a mostly decent DVD rental service at reasonable prices.
Speaking of prices, if you're happy with MovieConnect's service, you may want to take advantage of their excellent 'pre-pay' options which can save you as much as 30%. Just pay for your subscription up front for 3, 6 or 12 months (rather than monthly) and enjoy quite significant discounts as well as free extra months' subscription.
Movieconnect get two-thumbs up for:
MovieConnect's oh-so-simple to use website, and their up-front and honest approach impresses. Movieconnect's movie information and synopses are excellent too, and you can accurately cross-reference movies by actor or cast member.

To add insult to injury even their cancellation site doesn't work!"
