Review of Rent Games Online Game Rental

STOP PRESS! It looks like Rent Games Online should now be called Rent Games Offline. The site is down and we suspect they have joined the ever growing list of games and dvd rental companies that have gone bust in the last 12 months.

RENT GAMES ONLINE - once one of our favourite games rental sites - appears to have fallen behind some of the other bigger players in the games rental market (such as Lovefilm, WhyBuyGames and Swapgame) with little improvement or additions to their 2,100 games titles for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Xbox 360.

What's more, Rent Games Online inexplicably still does not offer PS3 games for rental, despite assurances over a year ago that this may change.

Quick access to 2,100 games

With a reasonably well constructed rental site and pretty much standard games rental subscription rates, RentGamesOnline still gives you pretty quick access to all of their 2,100 games.

The Rent Games Online main page features the latest releases for all consoles and we're pleased to report that these remain impressively up to date. Not that it should be any other way, but in this industry it is not unusual to see Daley Thomson's Decathlon (circa 1984) still featured as a new release. OK, its not quite that bad, but almost!

Games are neatly broken down into genres and sub-genres, which makes browsing the RentGamesOnline site a breeze.

One should never underestimate the importance of easy browsing with a games rental service. After all, once you have used up the games you most want to play, the ability to browse and be inspired becomes the über-important.

Unfortunately not all of Rent Games Online's games - in particular the less popular, or older titles - carry descriptions on the site, so you will have to do some research, take a chance, or know what you're looking for. There is little excuse for this when the catalogue barely breaches the 2,000 watermark. Think about the online DVD rental sites who have descriptions for over 50,000 titles in some cases.

On the plus side all games do show the age rating as well as a customer star ratings - or in this case, 'cube' ratings. The rental games from RentGamesOnline generally only come with the in-game controls and instructions, but RentGamesOnline are also regularly adding printable versions for a selection of titles.

Worryingly abandoned member forums

RentGamesOnline's new member forums would be a nice touch and potentially a great way to swap ideas and strategies with other like-minded gamers (or perhaps, more realistically, have a bitch 'n' moan about availability of top titles if RGO slip up on this), but the forum has been down for months on end while they 'test some functionality'!

Back in the day when this Rent Games Online forum was working (we think Tony Blair was still in office at the time) they tended to be kind of quiet and some of the sub-forums were in desperate need of a moderator to clear out the spam.

In an industry where smaller players are going under on an almost monthly basis, things like this do make you go hmmm... and unfortunately bear the hallmark of a service that's not quite on top of its game.

RentGamesOnline get two-thumbs up for:
RentGamesOnline's logical, clean design, and the ease of searching by console and game or by category.
