LISTING virtually every DVD in the UK with a head count of over 60,000, SofaCinema DVD Rental is likely to be the first stop for film connoisseurs, movie-snobs, people who wear berets and those who 'take the Guardian'!.

Culture conscious

SofaCinema is powered by LoveFilm, by far the most popular DVD rental service in the UK, and run by the culture-conscious Guardian Newspapers Ltd, something that is reflected in the extra content and film reviews on the site, which tend to err towards the high-brow, intelligent variety.

While the SofaCinema DVD Rental site lacks the superb design integrity of the new Guardian Unlimited website, it is still dead simple to use, based as it is on the user-tested-to-death Lovefilm structure.

Well organised

SofaCinema DVD rental is more than just a well-organized site and efficient service, it also boasts a collection of informative, entertaining articles to give you the inside scoop from the Guardian's superb film section. From film-festival breakdowns to British and American Film Festival Top 100 lists to more than 150 genres and subgenres, its selection runs the gamut of film lovers' tastes.

And what about the games?

The Guardian newspaper's games reviews are always cerebral affairs, so it's a pity they didn't put as much thought into the games rental service on their SofaCinema DVD (and now game) rental service.

Being tied to the limitations of their parent service, Lovefilm, Sofa Cinema Games is more an interesting sideshow to their main service, rather than a games rental site for serious button-bashers, such as Swapgame Games Rental.

Still, with a small but reasonable selection of titles - and evidence that Lovefilm is increasingly pushing its games rental service - gamers can choose between games and or movies in a useful mix'n'match affair.

SofaCinema only offer two packages though, rather than the three packages offered by their daddy site, Lovefilm, with no other discernible benefits except that they're more blooming expensive! So we'd suggest this is one is for avid Guardian fans only.

"As you can see by the stars over to the left the availability of rentals with Sofa Cinema is not good. I had a title as my top priority for months and it was never sent, despite frequent queries to Sofa Cinema's Customer Service. Waste of time, bought the title from Amazon in the end as I got fed up waiting!"
