WHILE site design is no guarantee of quality, when a site looks like it was designed by David Blunkett with a breeze block, it does make you wonder what kind of DVD rental operation this really is.

Difficult and dull

The ViewDVD site suffers from black backgrounds and text-heavy page layouts which makes browsing for titles to rent both difficult and very dull. Fans of early web design techniques - circa 1994 - would probably disagree but for the rest of us it all looks a little, you know, panties.

To make matters worse, ViewDVD's A-Z Listings facility is virtually useless since it's navigated via a list of page numbers rather than alphabetical links, so it's not actually an A-Z at all! This made picking any particular movie a bit a trial.

ViewDVD's customer service is not bad, but like a lot of these bottom-of-the-league DVD rental players, can be sketchy at times.

This despite the fact that ViewDVD promise better service by being small.

Lack of updates

Most worrying though is the lack of new movie updates on the ViewDVD site.

ViewDVD doesn't stock recent releases, and new titles are usually a few years old - and even those are added only occasionally.

The choice of ViewDVD's films (just over 4100 titles and, er, not growing) isn't bad but to put it in perspective is 61,000 short of Lovefilm's title tally. Laid end to end, Lovefilm's excess number of titles would reach from Land's End to John O' Groats then another 100 miles into the North Sea.

If ViewDVD want to compete seriously (and there seem to be very few signs that they do), they need nothing less than a complete design overhaul. And while the price of ViewDVD's sole 3-at-a-time package is low, a price cut would greatly counterbalance the limited catalogue size - and the worrying invalid Thawte security certificate glaring out from the front page of the site!
