HAVE you ever watched that clip on Youtube where the Coen Brothers' The Big Lebowski is cut down to just the swear words used in the film? Incredibly, the film still runs at 4 minutes and 10 seconds meaning that just over 4% of the entire movie was wall-to-wall cussing! We loved it, but we appreciate it is not for everyone.
Especially not Christians or children.
The eerily named Visioneers DVD Club is the UK's first online DVD rental company that borrows the popular American concept of providing only 'family friendly' (read Christian) DVDs for rent.
non-violent and non-sexual
Family friendly, in this case means the film has been certified by the controversial US-based Dove Foundation - a non-profit organisation set up specifically to endorse non-violent and non-sexual films, as well as to campaign against that sort of profligation.
The problem is that the films that make it or don't make it onto the list appear to be based on their judeo-christian merits, rather than on their actual family-friendliness.
While this will serve conservative Christian film lovers just fine, it is perhaps less suitable for others who will find the limited 5000+ titles not only spartan, but suspiciously ecclesiastical.
We were particularly surprised therefore not to see a copy of the Oscar nominated Jesus Camp in the catalogue of titles. Hmmm...
Excellent DVD rental service
That aside, the actual rental service that Visioneers DVD Club offers is excellent.
There is a wealth of different rental packages available - more than any other DVD rental service we have seen - including a package specifically for school or youth groups.
The 14 day free trial is available on just about all the packages except the 'Taster' package, which only has a 7 day free trial.
We found the turnaround of titles to be on par with most DVD rental services, with the usual problems of Royal Mail holding things up more than Visioneers DVD Club.
Satisfaction
An interesting (and brave) poll on the site allowing users to rate Visioneers DVD Club's service publicly reveals a mostly positive to neutral spread of satisfaction. This is backed up by our own experience with the service.
While it is great to see niche DVD rental services like Visioneers DVD Club flourishing in the current competitive market, we wish they'd broaden their scope a little and offer a real family-friendly service that remained secular.
For religious folk however, Visioneers DVD Club may not be manna from heaven, but at least their kids won't get their hands on a copy of The Big Lebowski.
