HIGH-STREET newsagent W H Smith has branched out from flogging Caravanner's Weekly and polo mints into the heady world of online DVD rental (and now games rental too).

However, rather than setting themselves up independently, the WHSmith rental service runs on the back of the LoveFilm service in the same way that Tesco, Sofa Cinema (The Guardian), CD WOW! and EasyCinema do.

So what is there to distinguish WHSmith Movies Direct from its LoveFilm masters? Not much.

WHSmith DVD rental offers a smaller number of DVD rental packages than LoveFilm but those they do offer are sadly no cheaper than LoveFilm's.

So unlike Tesco DVD Rental which is also powered by Lovefilm, but offers slightly cheaper packages, there is no price benefit in opting for WHSmith Movies Direct over Lovefilm.

Longest DVD rental free trial

WHSmith Movies Direct does however offer a significantly longer free trial than LoveFilm, but if you've ever taken a free trial from either LoveFilm or one of its other 'private label' sites (such as Tesco DVD Rental), you won't be eligible for this WHSmith free trial.

On the plus side, WHSmith DVD rental has a nicely designed web site with easy to view rating graphics and editor's choice movies. The classic LoveFilm 'mood' and year released categories make browsing for titles to rent both fun and easy.

But is WHSMith Movies Direct better than LoveFilm? Considering Lovefilm's staggering wealth of extra movie-related content, it's free (and paid-for) movie downloads and now its PAYG service, we'd suggest it is not.

And WHSMith's Games Rental packages?

WHSmith Movies Direct doesn't pretend to be a devoted games rental provider, but for a little bit more than you'd pay for their unlimited DVD rental packages you can include a pick of their ever-increasing range of games titles.

Riding on the back of Lovefilm's growing games service you can at least rest assured that your games rental is being handled by one of the biggest players in the games rental game.

Pleasingly, Lovefilm is putting more and more emphasis on its games rental packages, which is great news for WHSmith games rental customers, who'll benefit directly from this development.
